Wilderness Solitude Monitoring

A big THANKS to the many volunteers who gave their time in support of our Solitude Monitoring effort with the Gunnison National Forest Service (Forest Service) this summer. Volunteers put in over 80 hours to complete the initiative.

Solitude Monitoring is one of the elements in the Wilderness Stewardship Performance (WSP) program, and is undertaken every five to 10 years by the Forest Service. A link to the guidebook can be found on the button below.

In the summer and fall of 2018, Silent Tracks volunteers completed observational surveys that involved counting the number of people seen on foot, horseback and in camps on two trails in the West Elks Wilderness, Mill Castle Trail #450 and Coal Mesa Trail #451.
